Who reached my blog : Some body searched for this

poor tape data protector
if you want reset a data protector poor tape use omnimm reset_poor #media label#
it marks as tape. you can format the media if it reusable it ok. after formatting also it went for poor we cant use any more.

import data protector media into another data protector cell.
this as simple as you select media and select import and do import.
it imports all the data it may takes 5-6 hours depend upon the data.

Could not connect to inet in order to start VBDA@ error
May be network down, or host down. please check by pinging the host.
if ping ok . use telnet #hostname# 5555 to check DA working or not on the client.
There is no more space available in any of the Detail Catalog directories
I recommend to learn about omnidbutil tool in data protector for HP DP Backup administrator.
This is the key tool in extending all kind of table / Database sizes.

HP Data protector IDB size Error There is no more space available in any of the Detail Catalog directories.

For Above Error we need to check IDB Usage:

we can check idb space : omnirpt -report db_size.

Here we can get all info about all table space . According to the usage we extend the space by omnidbutil command.

through omnidbutil comand we can extend : Filename , DCBF sizes.

Working with Networker 7.6

From the last week i am learning net worker as i got some free time now. It is very funny and looking little complex administration. in my first working day with net worker i felt data protector is more user friendly and easy to administration.

I will put some of my experiences .

For installation files i downloaded form EMC site where i registered my mail id after that i got download link from EMC .

Downloaded and installed which can work for all this month.

HP Data Protector : Mount request for Media from other pool,

I don't know where the bug in IDB but in some cases i found 2 extreme behaviours in Data protector.
1. Mount request raised for media which belongs to other pool, even we have enough Media in Expired pool
observations and resolution: This Problem occured in VTL which is having deduplication. so we can't format the slot but we resolved this by making tape protection none ( Allocation order changed to Media) and backup restarted problem resolved.

2. This is a also silly problem we have enough expired tapes (Freepool) in Expired pool. due to firmware(?) problem tape library recognised cleaning tape as UNKOWN Media, when ever backup starts backup going for cleaning tape and it is hanging.
Resolution : Temporerly we formatted required media into required pool . scheduled backup went fine with out any problem.

Working DCBF and IDB enovrn link,

Hmm, as for admin guide there is no solution we we can directly deal with such error . link between Enovorn and database path varialbes. but i got a clue hope it can resolve the issue.

More i am looking into where we can get some info about OB2_OpenFile: error codes or how it works.

Hp Data protector cleaning tape usage

Cleaning Tape Usage
The cleaning status is NOT checked while a medium is in the drive and being written to. The status of the cleaning request is checked only when a medium is being loaded or changed. So, if the drive sets the cleaning bit, part way through a backup session, the medium is not immediately unloaded. It will be used until it is full, assuming that there is enough data to fill it, in the current backup session.
When medium #1 is unloaded, the cleaning request will be checked; the cleaning tape will be loaded and used. After that, medium #2 will be loaded to continue the backup. It is possible that medium #1 is in bad shape and could be the cause of the cleaning request. However,
Data Protector assumes the medium is still 'Good' and does not mark medium #1 as 'Poor'. The medium will be used again, when it is the 'least recently used'.
If medium #1 is really faulty, this will show up next time it is used, when the write operations fail. Then it will be marked 'Poor' and not used again.
DDS cleaning tapes are a fixed length, with just enough for '25 times 30 seconds' of cleaning. When 30 seconds of cleaning has completed successfully, the clean bit on the drive is reset. The cleaning tape moves forward, over one section of tape, for each 30 seconds of cleaning and it NEVER rewinds! It just moves along until it gets to the end and then it stops.
Once it is at the end, it is an 'expired' cleaning tape. If you load an 'expired' cleaning tape, the tape is active for less than 20 seconds, it does not actually do any cleaning and the cleaning bit is NOT reset. Data Protector can initiate a cleaning operation when the drive sets the cleaning bit. After the cleaning is done, Data Protector will recheck the cleaning bit. If it is still set, Data Protector will terminate the session and will report that the cleaning tape was requested twice for the device.
